Noted as the world's only Corn Palace...this structure was first constructed back in 1892, but has since been used in this present building and location since 1921. The structure is a tribute of sorts to the agricultural heritage of the rich, fertile soil of South Dakota. And let me tell you, they have some rich soil, if Temple said it once, he said it a dozen times on our road trip last week...."Kimberly, would you look at that soil, it's so dark, look how dark it is, that's some good soil."
Every year the Corn Palace receives a new face lift of sorts....a committee decides what the new theme will be for that year and in the summer, after the corn is harvested, they begin the process of decorating the exterior of the palace, using over 275,000 ears of corn. They use the husks and the cobs of different naturally colored corn (13 differents shades are used) as well as other grains and native grasses to in the decoration process, which takes several months....
Although tourists come from all over to view the Corn Palace murals on the outside, there are also more designed panels inside the arena. And the arena is used for local events, high school basketball, and the day we were there a regional wrestling tournament was underway!
The theme for this year was "transportation through the ages"....
Yes, all of these panels lining the outside of the building, were created using different colored corn cobs, nailed in place one cob at a time....amazing, huh?
