Exhibition Extraordinaire at Alabama

Baby Girl and her competitive gymnastics team were the featured pre-meet exhibition show at a recent University of Alabama gymnastics meet.

It's really too bad her mother can't hold her iphone to video and hold up a long lens camera in the other hand to capture any decent pictures. But alas, it is what it is....at least she'll remember whether she was doing a front pass or a back pass on these tumbling runs, and what skill it is she is beginning or just completing. :)

Big Al thought she was great. That's one thing we can agree on. :)

The moment rah.rah.rah. took over our home.

Cheer clinic and tryouts were this week. She made it. The guys asked me earlier in the week when she would stop all that stomp/clap/stomp/clap mess she had been doing in the shower every night that you could hear all over the house.  I didn't have the heart to tell them it would be years before that would end, or when they are old enough to move out on their own.

Until then, we suffer together. Rah.Rah.Rah.

Life Lesson #374....do your math work, or else.

Here's another one of those parenthood lessons nobody tells you about when you're holding that firstborn sweet little darling infant, whom even when sitting in a diaper filled with his own poop, everyone thinks is cute.

Back in the month of January, Elder Son's math teacher saw me pass his room in the hallway at the high school and came out to speak to me.  I knew from the look on his face, a bit of trepidation, that it could not be good for Elder Son.  He proceeded to explain to me that apparently Elder Son had began second semester in a less than stellar fashion, having just graded a test and reassessed the homework scores to date, it seemed Elder Son had a current grade average of 23.  That would be on a 100 pt gradescale. A whopping 23.   He assured me that he had time to pull it up, we were only a tad over two weeks into the 9 week grading period, but he certainly wanted to make me aware of what was going on, or as it were, what was not going on, with Elder Son.

Being the good mother I am, I left the school hallway and immediately walked at a HIGHLY INTENSE pace with DEFINITE PURPOSE to the gym, whereas it was nearing the end of the school day and Elder Son has Athletic PE at this time.  Several guys were shooting basketball, along with Elder Son when I called his name in a DEFINITE WITH PURPOSE tone.  Of course a few of them turned and went,"ooohhh, Elder Son".....it was obvious something was up.  I realized the plight of teenage drama was not on my list to tackle for the day, so I pull pack my DEFINITE WITH PURPOSE attitude a bit and (breathe in breathe out) take on a slight smile and call him aside, pretending to ask about the pending basketball game, what time the bus is leaving, if he has money or needs money for something to eat, he answers calm and cool and unknowing of the firestorm coming, as his guard has been lowered.  I don't want to embarrass him in front of the peers, so as he edges closer to me in conversation, I ask, "do you have your phone"....he thinks I'm curious about it to make certain he doesn't forget it in a locker or his bag on the bus or some nonsense....he pats his pocket and says "yes m'am, it's right here"......"WELL HAND IT OVER, YOU HAVE A 23 IN MATH". (That was also in a definite with purpose tone, just so you know.)

Shock and Awe wave over him like a bout of seasick nausea. However, with no Dramamine in sight, he has no ability to dispute my words and simply hands the phone over.  I depart the arena without another word. Sometimes, I have learned this lesson so far, silence is best.  Let them think about it, stew it around their brains. And so that's what happened.  Until that evening, after the game and our return home.  Where we had a long discussion.

It seems Elder Son decided Christmas Break was tons of fun and carried it over to mid-January.  Even though he was at school physically, he had forgotten to use his brain while there. Funny thing, it is an organ that will tell your lungs to breath for you automatically, but you kind of have to use self-motivation to make it work a math problem. He tried giving us a few excuses that were LAME in nature....for example, "I didn't understand it, it was hard and I studied".....really?  Because in all my days, I've yet to see you bring home a math book and study at night.  "Well, I just didn't understand it, and even when he tried to explain it again, I still didn't get it.".....really?  So, the fact that your father has tutored countless kids at that very high school in the last 10 years, specifically in the subject of MATH, you've heard them sit at our kitchen table for lessons in Geometry, Calculus, Algebra, Statistics, etc. etc. etc.......it never occurred to you that maybe if you brought the "I don't know how to do this, I can't figure it out" math work home with you, your father would help you see the mathematical light?

Did y'all know teenage boys can be really, really dumb sometimes?  Yeah, I knew that too, in fact I learned that back in the 80's.  Still stands true today. Let me just add that this might not be a big deal had Elder Son not been on the All A or A-B honor roll for his entire life and is more than capable of continuing to excel at that level, with effort.  So, we informed Elder Son that as punishment for this bad grade, he would no longer have a phone, was grounded from doing anything with friends on the weekends until we determined he had switched his brain back to the ON position and decided to start applying himself a little better in Math.

Now, y'all, I'm not a math whiz, it's not my strong suit, never really was, but even I realized starting at a value of 23 this was going to be a rather strenuous climb up the ol' math mountain.  Daily I would ask Elder Son if he was pulling his grade u?, was he completing all homework assignments?, classwork?, tests?, etc. And each week we watched his grade SLOWLY creep up from a very low F to what some would call a high F.....whatever, an F's an F, y'all.  Nearing the end of week 6, sitting at a solid "D" in math, I realized this was going to take some type of parting of the red sea miracle for Elder Son to not mar his scholastic record.

So, I pulled out the only bullet I had left that could make an impact on Elder Son. Do you know what is more important to teenage boys than a phone, or an xbox game, or time on the weekends with friends???  Getting to FINALLY drive a vehicle without your parents sitting in the front seat directing your every stop, turn, park and go.

I had actually resigned myself not to worry about him making a C, albeit I would be upset, I've long since conquered that demon that thought you saw perfection in an honor roll certificate at the end of the school year.  Sure, a "C" would not be Elder Son's true best in that class, and we all knew that, but I'm telling you, we were willing to take it, if necessary.

In hope of giving my parenting skills one last shot at supremacy over dumb teenager situations, I announced the new gameplan.  And this is what I told Elder Son, "look, if you do not bring home a B on that report card, I want you to know that I will take you to get your driver's license, and you can pass the test and have a fine looking photo ID to carry around in your wallet, because you WILL NOT DRIVE ANYWHERE until the end of school, when the next grading period comes around and you have pulled that score up to a B. That means you won't be driving until at least June.  Won't that be a shame, have a perfectly good vehicle to call your own in the driveway, with a perfectly legit license in your back pocket and plenty of PERFECTLY good reasons to help your mother taxi everyone here there and everywhere in between BUT TO NO AVAIL...because you won't be driving to school, to baseball practice, to meet up with friends, or even to the store to get milk....you will be grounded from driving until summer."

Shock and Awe set in again.  Days of painstaking point by point increases in his grade came and went, until it was the final week of grading. He had been working hard and had pulled in close at a 76.7.....desperation had set in, his eyes were weakening to the dreaded punishment that may actually come upon him. He worked problem after problem of extra credit, completed every assignment given.....and managed to pull out a 79.56.

Now y'all, I told you I wasn't a math whiz, but even I remember learning that if it's 5 or more you round up. Or at least that's what the do with the grading system. So, although I've yet to see the printed report card that says Elder Son has a B, he's holding fast to that fact, JACK!

Especially since he turned 16 just 5 days ago.....my little St. Patrick's Day baby.

Kids.

It is a rare moment these days that all 3 are in the same spot with me and a camera nearby.....so I had to take a random pic just to document the now seemingly momentous occasion.

Here she is....Miss 4th Alternate

Baby Girl won a spot in the pageant, 4th alternate, I know you're thinking what I'm thinking, she should have won the crown, the judges must have been blind. Oh, that's not what you were thinking? Well, it should have been. :)   All jokes aside, she did great and we were so proud of her confidence and beauty....plus that sweet little (I've lost my side front top teeth) smile of youth.

And dare I even mention how dapper those brothers look?  Elder Son in a bowtie...be still my beating heart! Kudos to me, the suit shop taught me how to tie a bowtie...that's REAL y'all. The guys also took stage the same night for the High School Campus Queen and King pageant. The contest itself was held a couple of weeks prior on a Sunday afternoon in an interview process with judges. Where I am happy to report, Middle Child smooth talked his way into receiving the highest award he could as a tender young 8th grader not eligible for the King title and septer....he pulled out 1st alternate, beating his older brother yet again!

Happy V Day, I hope you don't vomit.

Baby girl handed out these clever little valentines....clever because, hey, pinterest has great ideas which are even greater when it means you don't have to sign 30 cards!!

And what to do at a Valentine Party these days?  Play the chubby bunny game.
Because 6th graders enjoy any form of entertainment where you couple competition with engaging classmates gag reflex to see who pukes first.

Because what is love?
In my book, you don't really know love, until you've cleaned up someone else's vomit.

Oh, what a night! Fox 6 All-Stars Banquet

12 players were chosen, one from each division 1A-6A for offense and defense.  My dark boy was the only JUNIOR in the group chosen for this honor. Of the other 11 players sharing the night with him, 7 had already committed to play football at the next level, for Murray State, Jacksonville State, Vanderbilt, Southern Miss and Alabama to name a few!

Oh, yes, here's the nice hardware, but don't forget to enjoy the other photos from the evening!

In the parking lot knotting ties and touching up collars before the big show....

Guest speaker was DeMeco Ryans --played for Jess-Lanier High School, University of Alabama, was named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year and currently plays with the Philadelphia Eagles. He was a great speaker, highly motivational and very down to earth.  After the banquet and photo opportunities, DeMeco took the 12 athletes into a room to talk with them alone, really nice guy. Very committed to making a difference and encouraging other young athletes to achieve their goals.

Next up on the two big screens, my dark boy's highlight reel  (Baby Girl was excited to see she made the highlight reel with him during one of the games this past season) and snippets from his interview conducted a couple of weeks prior to the banquet.

He did a fantastic job and everyone enjoyed his story of how he received the nickname "Tank"--given to him by his grandmother.

Head Football Coach did a great job as well, when asked to describe Tank in one word: "physical".

On stage receiving his award, a bit nervous, but he did well.

The group of All-Star top athletes with DeMeco Ryans.  Look, I know I'm partial, but dark boy is the cutest and sweetest and best dressed and best smile of the whole bunch!!! Hands down favorite. :)

Of course we all had to have a few pictures made with
THE 1A Offensive Player of the Year!!!

And of course all the kids could care less, dark boy is just one of them with a big gold football otherwise, but they did want a picture with DeMeco Ryans....not every day you get to stand with an NFL player!

And of course, Middle Child couldn't resist getting a single shot with his new BFF DeMeco.

Nor did he miss an opportunity to snap a quick shot with the pretty Fox 6 Sideline reporter for the news station.  He was quick to tell us that SHE asked for her picture to be made with him. :)

Note to self: when having your photo made with dark boy in the dead of winter,
try the tanning bed next time so you don't look so pasty white!

Couldn't be any prouder of this fine young man, the hard work he has put into using the talents God gave him, and his heart to try even harder in the classroom and on the field. A blessing indeed. Congrats Tank!

If you can receive Fox 6 news station out of Birmingham, Alabama, they will broadcast a condensed version of the banquet on Saturday, February 9th, 2013 from 5:30-7:00 p.m.  I'm not sure if the highlight reels and interviews of the players will be aired or what they will use from the evening, but it's worth a look!

True Love.

Oh, you think you know about love. When you're in 3rd grade and some little boy brings you a pink teddy bear for Valentine's. And then you realize later on in Jr. High that you were mislead, because that wasn't love, but "going steady" with a guy is totally it. And then, before you know it, you're a senior, and those little jr. high kids are so cute with their crazy ideas of love, because you know beyond a shadow of a doubt that the football player who shares your locker and gave you his letterman jacket to wear is REAL love. Any of this ring a bell? Anyone? Anyone?

Although I won't name names, I remember exactly who gave me my first Valentine that "meant" something in the 3rd grade, and I remember who gave me my first Valentine love gram with carnations at school in Jr. High, and the first locker I shared and lettermen I wore, and Prom date, and college gameday weekends with those whom I thought were REAL love. Girls, we can be so naive.

I love my husband, we shared some of those later years of collegiate time together. And I knew he was the one. They say you'll know when you know, and they are right. I knew. And I'm just happy that he "knew" it was me for him too. There's the rub, when only one of the partners in a relationship, "know" it's the one. The real one. But anyway, he felt about me as I did about him....so we made it official and became husband and wife. And then you live in marital bliss ever after, right? Yea, something like that. But deep down you realize that you finally know LOVE, real LOVE.

And then, lo and behold, you have a child. And your world stops in that instance you hold them in your hands for the first time and you realize...this is it. This is LOVE. Genuine, unabashed, unconditional, lay down my life for you, L.O.V.E. It is by far the hardest emotion of love to describe, as the words of this world cannot hold the vastness of the love you have for your child, those you give birth to, those you adopt, those that just filter in and out through the years. It's the most solid love I have ever known. And believe me, let me say again, I love my husband, with the depths of my heart, but a mother's love is something else.

And so, you think you have finally figured it out. Love. It's just a 4 letter word, but in the hands of God it can be empowering beyond belief. Knowing Jesus, having a relationship with him, that is Love. That is the true love we all seek to have. People search all kinds of ways to fill that spot in your heart, never being satisfied with the worldly offers, because it cannot be filled except with Jesus, and his unconditional love.

It's hard for me to imagine anyone loving someone else more than I love Elder Son, Middle Child and Baby Girl, but God loves us even more.

H3 for February is only a part of a verse from the old testament, but it speaks all you need to know for this month of LOVE:

"He delights in unchanging love"

~Micah 7:18

He, our Lord, is faithful in His love for you.  He is loyal in His love for you.  He is merciful in His love for you. And his love, his faithfulness, his loyalty, his grace is UNCHANGING.  He doesn't pull your pigtails on the playground, or share your locker one week and break up with you the next.  If you have a relationship with Him, you are His and can rest secure in HIS UNCHANGING LOVE.

A big honor for my dark skinned boy...

Recently this sweet boy was named Fox 6 (Birmingham News Station) 1A Offensive Player of the Year!  A big deal in our little neck of the woods and such an honor for this athlete and our school.  He is a joy to watch on the field, natural talent abounds.  We look forward to attending the ceremony and banquet with him to receive his award and we couldn't be more proud of all of his accomplishments!

A funny story from this football season that coincides with many of these photos that I must share. My husband usually posts the photos I take from each football game on facebook for all the high school kids to see.  And generally, every week, the football guys all find a picture they like of themselves in action to add to their profile or such. And of course I always take a picture at the end of each game, win or lose, with the football players in their line for the alma mater, where Baby Girl always finds a seat on Tank's knee.

Well, during halftime of one game, the cheerleaders of the opposing team were talking to some of our cheerleaders and referring to the pictures on facebook, then one asked if the little girl in all the pictures with Tank was his little sister.  One of the cheerleaders replied, "yea,  not really, but sort of, I guess you could say that."  She could hardly wait to get back across the field to tell me about it. We all laughed and then I looked at the girls with a serious face and replied, "could she not see the resemblance in the photos? well, maybe in July when Baby Girl has a better tan you can see it."
